This movie is the first part of the story of God of the Universe. The events of the film were later dramatized into The Legend of Beerus, the God of Destruction in Dragon Ball Super.
Four years have passed since Majin Buu's great battle that decided the fate of the entire universe. In the Sacred Kai Realm, Jebbets Kai and Old Kai speak via telepathy about King Kai and Beerus' early awakening. Goku visits King Kai's planet for training, and while he and Bubbles are running, he overhears their conversation. King Kai explains that he is a "god of destruction" because there are gods who create life and the world, but there are also gods who maintain balance by destroying them. Goku is delighted at the thought of such a powerful enemy and expresses his desire to challenge Beerus, but King Kai continues to reprimand him, revealing that Beerus has a completely different level of power. In the Kais system, Jibehu Kai and Lao Cai cannot know how many planets will be destroyed after the God of Destruction awakens.
Meanwhile, on the planet Beerus, the mysterious Whis was walking slowly and earnestly. When he arrives at Pyrrhus' bedroom, an alarm bomb explodes, but Pyrrhus continues his 39-year sleep. Weiss, God's servant, insists that they wake up now, threatening to play 'The Awakening' if they don't. Pyrrhus is so scared that he wakes up and slides out of bed onto a floating rock. He's still upset and wakes up 15 years earlier than before, but Wes reminds him that he set this as his next wake-up time and asks if he wants to wake up earlier. Beerus wipes his skin and says something worrying about this era.
As Beerus continues to eat breakfast, Whis asks him about the galactic tyrant Frieza and whether he destroyed Planet Vegeta. Whis confirmed the planet's destruction and Beerus was delighted to hear the news. He then states that he doesn't particularly like people on Earth, especially King Vegeta. Beerus planned to destroy the planet himself, but he was so far away that he didn't care at all. Beerus also expressed disgust with the evil Frieza and decided to destroy him next. However, Whis told Beerus that Frieza was killed by a Saiyan named Goku some time ago. Its real name is also Kakarot. Whis then used his scepter like a projector to show the past battle between Super Saiyan Goku and Frieza on Namek. Whis then points out that although almost all of the Saiyans were destroyed along with their planet, some are still alive and living in other worlds, including Vegeta, the Saiyan prince himself. While watching, Beerus touches the egg which he eats and destroys and is genuinely amazed that a Saiyan, let alone anyone else, can defeat Frieza. Whis also explained that the surviving Saiyans gained the ability to transform into Super Saiyans. The words sounded familiar to Beerus, and he remembered that he had dreamed of fighting a similar Super Saiyan God. He is convinced it was a prophetic dream, but Weiss reminds him that in the past his dreams were not at all trustworthy. To resolve this issue, Beerus decided to negotiate with Oracle Fish. He asks the Fish if there was a prophecy that one day he would face a mighty warrior, but the Oracle Fish has no recollection of what was said. But Pyrrhus was sure that this was what it said, so the fish agreed that it must be true. Now Beerus had no doubt that this warrior must be a Super Saiyan God. However, Whis remains skeptical and finds it difficult to imagine anyone posing a true challenge to Beerus. They decide to track down this enemy by hunting down the remaining Saiyans. Weiss reveals that most of them are on Earth, "Planet 4032-877". However, Goku, who defeated Frieza, is currently staying on King Kai's planet, so the two set out to fight him.
