The RX-78-2 Gundam is the titular mobile suit of Mobile Suit Gundam television series. Part of the RX-78 Gundam series, it was built in secret on Side 7. The Gundam would turn the tide of war in favor of the Earth Federation during the One Year War against the Principality of Zeon. It was primarily piloted by Amuro Ray.

The Gundam was incredibly advanced for its time. Built from lightweight Luna Titanium Alloy, its frame was both lighter than that of Zeon's mass-produced mobile suits and much sturdier, able to shrug off a MS-06 Zaku II's machine gun fire with little to no damage. Its offensive power was above and beyond that of the Zakus. The Gundam would engage in most battles with its beam rifle, making it the first mobile suit to have firepower equivalent to a battleship's beam cannons. In addition, it made use of two beam sabers, blades of extremely hot plasma which could cut through any metal with ease. Those beam sabers could be extended into a spear-like beam javelin, which could be used to stab into an enemy from a longer distance.

The Gundam also used more conventional weaponry; it could launch rockets with a "Hyper Bazooka", the Federation's answer to the bazookas used by Zeon's Zakus; in addition, its head was outfitted with a pair of small vulcan guns, as a way of attacking light-armored aircraft and vehicles without wasting ammo or energy from its more powerful armaments. It also made use of a very unconventional close-range weapon known as the "Gundam Hammer" - a large weapon similar to a flail which could be swung at enemies to deal crushing damage. The Gundam Hammer was eventually upgraded for use in space and outfitted with a number of verniers on the ball, and renamed to be the "Hyper Hammer". Lastly, it wielded a shield which would offer it a defense against enemy attacks that not even its Luna Titanium body could withstand without damage. Gundam pilot, Amuro Ray, would make use of the shield as a decoy in many battles, taking advantage of its size to fool the enemy into thinking he was charging at them, then attacking the enemy through the shield.

In terms of technology, the Gundam was equipped with a sophisticated Learning Computer which would collect pilot and enemy data during skirmishes and allow the Gundam to operate more effectively. The data from the computer was used by the Federation to improve the controls of the Gundam's mass-produced form, the RGM-79 GM. In addition, it was upgraded by Federation technician Mosque Han shortly before the Battle of A Baoa Qu to improve its reaction times, the joints of the Gundam were given a Magnet Coating, based on the experimental procedure performed on the RX-78-3 G-3 Gundam and later used on Amuro's intended successor unit, the RX-78NT-1 Gundam NT-1.

The Gundam makes use of the Core Block System implemented in the other V Project units. The torso of the Gundam is mostly hollow so that a FF-X7 Core Fighter can dock with it. This allows the pilot to jettison the legs and torso of the Gundam should the machine be too heavily damaged and gives the pilot a chance to escape from battle. Later, during Operation Odessa, the Gundam is given a support unit known as the G-Fighter. The two G-Fighters were designed to take advantage of the Gundam's modular system and diversify the Gundam's role in active combat. These modes ranged from the assault bomber G-Armor to the close combat support tank G-Bull. Officially, it is called a prototype, but it is also said to be more of a custom-made machine that is finished with high quality materials and the best technology.

The X-EX01 Gundam Calibarn (X-EX01 ガンダムキャリバーン X-EX01 Gandamu Kyaribān?) is a mobile suit introduced in Mobile Suit Gundam the Witch from Mercury. It is used by Suletta Mercury near the finale of Season 2.

The Vanadis Institute developed countless prototype units in addition to the Lfrith before the establishment of GUND FORMAT technology. Of these units, the Calibarn took the most strikingly different direction from that of the Lfrith. Unlike the Lfrith, which could be operated with minimal impact on the human body within a certain Permet Score, Calibarn prioritized mobile suit performance to seek the utmost limits of GUND-ARM capabilities and adopted extreme measures that did not guarantee the pilot's life protection at all. After losing to the Lfrith in the development competition, it is said that all records of the Calibarn were destroyed, and it was made off-limits and sealed away. Although it aimed to become the mainstream of GUND-ARMS, the Calibarn could very well have been considered the most cursed of all Gundams from the public sentiments.

Armaments

    Beam Vulcan

    Two firing ports are built in the forehead. These are weak rapid firing beam weapons used for checking enemy movement, damaging equipment, etc.

    Escutcheon

    A multi-purpose platform made up of 11 Bit Staves that had been equipped to the Aerial. It functions not only as a shield but also as a GUND-BIT, a next-generation remote-controlled swarm weapon system.

        Bit Stave

        Each bit (Bit Stave) can be detached to be operated as a mobile turret with built-in Beam Cannons or as a shield.

    Variable Rod Rifle

    A long portable firearm and the main weapon of the Calibarn. On its rear-end sits a propulsion unit made of four Quadra Thrusters, which can also be used to propel the Calibarn itself.

    Beam Saber

    A weapon for close combat that generates a beam blade, two are stored on top of the backpack.

The GN-9999 Transient Gundam is a Gunpla from Gundam Build Fighters Try. It is built and piloted by Wilfrid Kijima.

Used by team Celestial Sphere's team leader, Wilfrid Kijima, the Transient Gundam's design is based on the various GN Drive-equipped mobile suits appearing in Mobile Suit Gundam 00. The Gunpla's weaponry consists of up to two double-edged spears known as GN Partizans, and a pair of wrist-mounted GN Vulcans that can also function as GN Beam Sabers. The GN Partizans function as both melee and ranged weapons, and each can also act as one large Lance Bit or separate into two small Lance Bits. The Gunpla is also equipped with a GN Field for defensive purposes, and its trump card is the Transient Burst - a customized system that grants the Gunpla increased combat performance for a time. While airborne and in space, the Transient Gundam's feet are folded up.

Armaments

    GN Partizan

    A double-edged spear, the GN Partizan is a melee weapon with versatile uses. When swung, it can either fire a series of homing/curved beam shots or a large crescent-shaped beam. The GN Partizan can transform into a dedicated shooting form when the larger spear tip opens up. In this form, the GN Partizan can rapid fire standard beam shots or charged up for a beam cannon-like blast depending on how much the spear tip spreads apart. It can also function as a large Lance Bit or separate into two small Lance Bits. Furthermore, the weapon can be used for defensive purposes. It is capable of blocking both physical and beam attacks, and a makeshift Defense Rod with GN Field-like capabilities can be formed when the GN Partizan is spun rapidly. When required, the Gunpla can be equipped with two of these weapons and by crossing them, a series of lightning bolt-like attacks can be released.

        Lance Bit

        Each GN Partizan can function as a large remote controlled weaponry known as lance bit that can separate into two small lance bits. Regardless of the size, the lance bits are mainly used for close combat, but they also retain the GN Partizan's ranged combat capability.

    GN Vulcan/GN Beam Saber

    Located on the wrists, the GN Vulcans are smaller versions of GN Beam weaponry. They have a high rate of fire, but are low in power. As a result, they are mainly used as secondary ranged weapon or as defensive weapons for shooting down missiles, etc. The GN Vulcans can also generate GN Beam Sabers for close combat, and these GN Beam Sabers are used together with the small lance bits to perform the Gunpla's killer move.

    GN Smash Rifle

    A custom GN beam rifle used by the Gundam Portent, it is given to the Transient Gundam by Shia for use in the overtime battle during the finals of the U-19 Championship.
