This is the sixth installment in the Gundam series, set in the "post-colonial" setting. Like the original series, the plot of Gundam New Wing focuses on a future war between Earth and its colonies in the Earth-Moon system (specifically the year after Colony 195).
The drama is broadcast on Japan's TV Asahi terrestrial network. 49 episodes were broadcast from April 7, 1995 to March 29, 1996. It has been adapted into several comics and video games. Four original video animation (OVA) episodes were produced, including the sequel Operation Meteor and the direct sequel Endless Waltz. In 2010, Sumizawa began writing the novel "Frozen Teardrops", which is another sequel to the series. While the series did well in Japan, it was more successful in the United States and popularized the Gundam genre in the West.
The story
In the distant future, humans have established space colonies at five Earth-Moon Lagrange points to colonize space. In the underground world of the earth, various countries have united to form the United Earth Federation. This alliance used its powerful military power to oppress the colonies. Eager to break free, the colonies took action under the leadership of pacifist Hiro Yua. In Colony 175, Yui is shot by an assassin, forcing the colony to find peace again. The assassination allowed five disgruntled scientists from the Zodiac Organization (commonly known as OZ) to create the prototype of the Targish mobile suit.
The story of "New Gundam W" begins in post-colonial 195, beginning with "Operation Meteor": the scientists' revenge plan against OZ. The operation involves five young men, selected and trained by each of the five scientists, who are then equipped with highly advanced mobile suits called "Gundams" (designed by each scientist). A rare and extremely durable material known as Gundam Alloy that can only be created in the outside world). Each Gundam comes from a different colony, and the pilots are unaware of each other's existence.
The series focuses on five Gundam pilots: Heero Yui (nickname, not to be confused with the tortured pacifist), Duo Maxwell, Trowa Barton, Quatre Raberba Winner, and Chang Wufei. Their mission is to use the Gundam to directly attack Oz, strip its Alliance of weapons, and free the colony from their oppressive rule. The series also centers on Relena Peacecraft, the peaceful heir to the Kingdom of Sank, who becomes an important political ally to the Gundam pilots (particularly Sheila) throughout the series.
