In Pokémon FireRed & LeafGreen, the best early Pokémon choices are ones that provide strong type coverage, fast evolutions, and utility for Gyms. Top picks include Mankey, Nidoran♂/♀, Spearow, Pikachu, and Magikarp (leading to Gyarados).

Recommended Early Pokémon

- Mankey: Found on Route 22 (near Viridian City). Its Fighting-type moves are invaluable against Brock's Rock-types in FireRed, giving you an early advantage.

- Nidoran♂/♀: Available on Route 22. Both evolve quickly into Nidorino/Nidorina and then Nidoking/Nidoqueen with a Moon Stone, offering versatile movepools and solid stats.

- Spearow: Found on Route 3. Evolves into Fearow at level 20, giving you a reliable Flying-type attacker early on.

- Pikachu: Found in Viridian Forest. While rare, it evolves into Raichu and provides Electric coverage against Misty's Water-types.

- Magikarp: Purchased from the Poké Center near Mt. Moon. Though weak at first, it evolves into Gyarados at level 20, becoming one of the strongest mid-game Pokémon with high Attack and Intimidate ability.

Why These Pokémon Are Great Early Picks
- Type Coverage: Fighting (Mankey), Electric (Pikachu), Flying (Spearow), and Water (Gyarados) cover many Gym weaknesses.

- Fast Evolutions: Nidoran and Spearow evolve quickly, giving you strong mid-game options without heavy grinding.

- Utility Against Gyms: Mankey helps with Brock, Pikachu with Misty, and Fearow with Erika's Grass-types.

- Long-Term Value: Gyarados and Nidoking/Nidoqueen remain powerful throughout the game, not just early on.

Strategy Tip
Pair your starter with these early Pokémon to balance weaknesses:

- Charmander (Fire) + Mankey (Fighting) helps against Brock.

- Squirtle (Water) + Nidoran (Poison/Ground) adds offensive variety.

- Bulbasaur (Grass) + Spearow (Flying) covers Grass and Bug matchups.
