The gameplay borrows concepts from many other fighting games, primarily the control scheme and team mechanics from the Marvel vs. Capcom series, including three main attack buttons and a unique action button along with a few other buttons. Unlike Extreme Butōden developed by Arc System Works, FighterZ plays closer to many other traditional fighting games developed by Arc System Works (by running on the same graphics as Guilty Gear Xrd). Unlike other fighting games, the three main attack buttons have multiple variations; light attacks are the same as in other games, while medium attacks are a combination of traditional medium and heavy attacks, knocking out opponents in one hit. Heavy attacks. The unique action button, or combined with a direction or special action move, can perform a ki blast or a ki-based special move.
Each player selects three characters to form a team. You control one character and can switch with one of the other characters at any time. Players can also summon one of the other characters to perform an "assist" move, letting the entire team attack and combo at the same time. All three characters on the team must be defeated to end the game.
The generic "vanish" and "spark blast" moves are similar to the Roman cancel system common in Arc System Works games and the dust attacks in the Guilty Gear series (similar in style to Before Xrd and After Xrd), while the "super dash move" is similar to the homing system of Arcana Hearts, similar to the channeling system in other Dragon Ball fighting games. As with the classic Dragon Ball fighting games mentioned above, characters can "charge" to increase their power level, similar to the mechanics of other fighting games that allow metered charging. Also added is the ability to deflect energy blasts or other projectiles via a blocking mechanic, and the ability to use a Dragon Dash similar to a basic throw, knocking victims back while the attacking Flying Dash pursues them.
Other mechanics include the use of the auto-combo system used by fighting games in Persona 4: Arena (tapping a button automatically performs a preset combo), which now also works with the mid-range attack button (giving all characters two auto-combos). The forward + mid attack is also a normal attack for all characters and cannot be used consecutively.
Almost all characters are planned to have different play styles/models, similar to modern fighting games, rather than using basic moves recycled from the Budokai series.
A character's choice of teammates may affect how some of their super skills change, such as Krillin if one of the two teammates in Android 18 is, or the Speed Dance in Android 18, if Gotenks is not one of the two he chose, either a teammate in the team, or Adult Gohan himself, he did not swap bodies with Captain Ginyu, the Super Saiyan potential that Adult Gohan unleashed in Ultimate Kamehameha.
