Mobile Suit Gundam (Japanese: Mobile SuitGundam ガンダム, Hepburn: Kidō Senshi Gandamu), also known as First Gund, Gundam 0079 or simply Gundam '79, is an anime television series produced and animated by Nippon Sunrise. Created and directed by Yuki Tomino, the series premiered on Japan's Nagoya Broadcasting Network and its ANN TV affiliate on April 7, 1979 and ran until January 26, 1980. , with a total of 43 episodes. This is Gunma's first film series and was later adapted into many sequels and spin-offs. The story takes place in the future "Cosmic Century" 0079. The story focuses on the war between the Principality of Zeon and the Earth Federation. civil.. Mechanic Amuro Ray.

In 1981, the play was re-edited and divided into three films. The characters were designed by Giichi Yasuhiko, with Kunio Okawara responsible for mechanical design, including the giant robot RX-78-2 of the same name. The first film was released on February 22, 1981. Tomino himself wrote a trilogy about the events of the series. The two manga adaptations of the series were also created by the two animators.

Although initially low ratings led to the series' cancellation, GTA's popularity was boosted by the release of Bandai Gunpla in 1980, as well as anime reruns and theatrical releases, creating a thriving and profitable gaming and media franchise. The series is known for revolutionizing the giant robot genre by depicting mobile suits as weapons of war and pilots as regular soldiers. This is a complete contrast to the previous style of hero pilots and their giant superhero robots.

Set in the fictional universe (Cosmic Century 0079 of the Gundunda calendar), the Principality of Zeon declares independence from the Earth Federation and subsequently begins a war of independence known as the "One Year War". This conflict directly affected every continent on Earth, as well as nearly every space colony and lunar settlement. Although outnumbered, the Zeon gained a tactical advantage by using a new type of humanoid weapon, the mobile suit. The war descended into a painful stalemate that lasted more than eight months after half of humanity and much of the planet's ecosystem died in the conflict.

The story begins when the newly deployed Federation warship "White Base" arrives at the Side 7 colony's secret research base and picks up the Federation's newest weapon. However, they were closely followed by the Zeon Army. A member of a Zeon reconnaissance team disobeys mission orders and attacks the colony, killing most of the Federation crew and civilians in the process. In a moment of desperation, the young Amuro Ray accidentally discovered the Federation's new prototype weapon, the RX-78Gundam, and successfully defeated the Zeon army. White Base goes all out and begins its survival journey together with new recruits and civilian refugees.

During their travels, White Base members often encountered Zeon Lieutenant Charles Aznable. Although Char opposed Amuro during the battle, he used his status as a member of the Federation to kill Zeon Zabi's family members as part of his revenge plan, being the Zeon, Son of Country and the original ancestor of his name. Amuro also met and fell in love with Lieutenant Lara Sun but accidentally killed her when he confronted Char. As Federation forces invade the Aba Aku fortress to defeat the Zeon forces, Amuro has a final duel with Char as both sides blame the other for Lala's death. Realizing that he had forgotten his true enemy, Char stopped the battle to kill the last surviving Zabi member, Kycilia Zabi. As the war drew to a close, Amuro reunited with his teammates, leaving the robot useless after the battle. The conflict officially ended when Prime Minister Zeon surrendered to the Federation, losing most of its industrial capacity and re-establishing the Republic. But many remnants of Gioni's forces hid, licking their wounds, hoping to exact revenge on the Federation at a time of their choosing.
